The first review for tonight is for When We Touch by Brenda Novak. It’s the Prequel novella to the new Whiskey Creek series.
The Whiskey Creek series takes place in the small town of Whiskey Creek, California. The residents are friendly and tight-knit. The main cast of characters are a group of friends who are close in age (early 30’s) and have known each other since childhood.
Overview: When We Touch tells the story of Olivia Arnold and Brandon Lucero. Olivia moved away recently, so she could start her own wedding planning business. When she moved away, she asked her then-boyfriend, Kyle Houseman, for a break. A few months later, Olivia is returning home for her sister, Noelle’s, wedding…to Kyle. It seems Kyle couldn’t keep it in his pants and now he and Noelle are expecting a baby.
The hero in When We Touch, Brandon Lucero, is a professional skier, home after being sidelined by a horrible accident. His family and friends don’t know the extent of his injuries, so he’s constantly hiding his pain until he can leave…after his step-brother’s wedding. (Yup, he’s Kyle’s step-brother.)
When We Touch opens with Olivia reaching the town line and having a major freak out on the side of the road. Brandon happens to be passing by and comes upon Olivia in a time of need. Since they are acquaintances, he offers Olivia some much needed support. Together, they stand up to Noelle and Kyle, also revealing some hidden feelings in the process.
During the wedding festivities, the reader is introduced to the small-town friends who’s stories are told in the other books in the Whiskey Creek series.
My Opinion: I think When We Touch was a great introduction to the Whiskey Creek series. I loved Brandon. His character made me wish I knew how to ski, so I could come across a man like him. He was sweet and tortured all at once. And Olivia, she was selfless and strong, sweet and caring. If I had a sister like Noelle, I’d want to drop kick her. Then Kyle, I originally hated him, I still don’t like him, but I did feel sorry for him.
My only disappointment is that Olivia and Brandon aren’t mentioned in the future books. (At least not in When Lightning Strikes or When Snow Falls). Kyle is a secondary character in the future books, only mentioned here and there.
If you like contemporary romance, this is a good start to a new series. It’s a short read, so it’s worth the risk. Give it a shot!!
